Moving Into The Neighbourhood

In John 20, the risen Jesus commissions his followers to mission with these words:

As the Father sent me, so I send you.

Which begs a question: How did the Father send Jesus? Because that is the model for our mission.

To answer that takes us back to John 1:

The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

Or, as Eugene Peterson put it in The Message:

The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighbourhood.

It is clear that the mission of sharing God’s love cannot be done at a distance. We have to live among people, and in relationship with them. The following two video interviews by Alan Roxburgh with Australian Christian Simon Carey Holt pick up on this theme. (And yes, he is softly spoken: you may need to turn up the volume at times.)
